Description
The course provides an introduction to the British and American legal systems: separation of powers, the legislative, executive and jucidial branches, the sources of law, common law as a source of law, American federalism, the American presidency, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Special emphasis is placed on legal terminology and communication skills.

Cognitive Skills:
  • define the sources of law in common law systems;
  • name the courts of England and Wales and distinguish between their competences;
  • explain the composition and functioning of the British Parliament
  • explain the functions of the Constitution of the United States of America;
  • recognize the most important functions of the United States Supreme Court;
  • apply relevant vocabulary in language exercises;
  • use relevant terminology;
Practical and Generic Skills:
  • present the acquired learning outcomes in English;
  • use appropriate language structures and terms in discussing the relevant topics;
  • develop communication skills in English;
  • participate in team work in the preparation of presentations in English.
