The purpose of the course is to expose students to the social, political, economic and legal issues that influence women's position in the society and to provide a comprehensive understanding of the underlying societal structures and power relations that define and influence women's ability to enjoy their human rights.
The course offers a synthesis of sociology and law (more precisely, of that part of legal studies that deals with women's rights as a particular subset of human rights).
It offers an initial overview of the sociological approaches to the study of women in society, which should equip students with the capacity to critically analyze women's positions within the societal institutions of law, work, education and politics.
Subsequently, it introduces women's human rights, equipping the students with knowledge on both the main international women's human rights instruments and domestic legislative norms that prescribe gender equality.
The course focuses on various substantive areas of rights - from the right to political representation, across the right to education and health (including reproductive health), to sexual violence, prostitution and sex trafficking. Finally, the overall purpose of this course is to increase students' competence to examine and apply the human rights framework through the lens of gender equality.
This course is taught through a combination of lectures, class discussions, group work and guest lectures.
