Description
The concept and typology of cities. Defining cities in normative and administrative-political practice (statistics, the United Nations, Croatian legislation). The appearance and development of town settlements (proto-urbanisation, localisation, communalisation, metropolisation). The process of urbanisation (the concept, types) . Large cities and urban agglomerations (urban areas, urban regions, continuously urbanised areas). The problems of city management (political, economic, utility, aesthetic, and ecological). Different roles of the city (political community of citizens, confederation of utility services, exponent of sustainable development, integrated urban development). Citizens participation in city management (the division of city area into smaller units - self-governing, administrative). The special status of capital cities and wider metropolitan areas. Functionalisation of the city territory (special units, special districts, ad hoc bodies). City and its surroundings (the methods of integration, monitoring, annexation of the outskirts).
